In the realm of education, there are individuals who go beyond just teaching; they inspire, guide, and shape the young minds that walk through their classroom doors. As we bid farewell to a remarkable educator at Big Pine High School, we celebrate the retirement of Mr. Pete Schlieker, a teacher who dedicated over two decades of his life to nurturing the intellects and spirits of countless students.

Mr. Schlieker’s journey in the realm of education began in 1999, at a time when his own children wandered the halls of Big Pine High School. Starting as a substitute teacher, Mr. Schlieker soon found his true calling when he obtained his teaching credential and embarked on a mission to educate through the lens of history and government. His classes resonated with both middle and high school students, as he weaved tales of the past and dissected the intricacies of governance with passion and zeal.

What truly set Mr. Schlieker apart was his unwavering commitment to his students’ growth. Year after year, he set the bar high, challenging his pupils to reach their full potential and surpass even their own expectations. Beyond the confines of the classroom, Mr. Schlieker’s influence extended to the realm of sports, where he coached teams with dedication and fervor, embodying the values of teamwork and sportsmanship.

His impact transcended academic and athletic realms. Mr. Schlieker’s presence loomed large in the extracurricular landscape of Big Pine High School, as he assumed roles such as ASB advisor and Class Crew Leader. It was a testament to his character that students, recognizing his leadership qualities, selected him to guide the Class of 2023, leaving an indelible mark on the school’s legacy.

Moreover, Mr. Schlieker’s vision extended beyond conventional boundaries. By liaising with the Inyo County elections office, he facilitated the participation of senior students in the student poll worker program on Election Day, instilling in them a sense of civic duty and engagement.

As we reflect on Mr. Schlieker’s illustrious career, marked by dedication, excellence, and empathy, we offer our heartfelt gratitude for his immeasurable contributions to the Big Pine High School community. His legacy will endure in the hallways, classrooms, and hearts of all who had the privilege of being taught, coached, or mentored by him. Mr. Schlieker’s retirement signifies the end of an era, but his impact will continue to resonate for years to come, a testament to the profound influence of a remarkable educator.

And while I never had Pete as a teacher, his presence was always profound in the halls of Big Pine High while I was a student there. He had this delusional idea that he could take me and all my friends at any sport we could attempt. Did I mention we are all over over 6-foot tall and athletic? Now, while I won’t divulge here whether he actually succeeded ever… I will say this: now you have plenty of time to practice old man! We’re ready and waiting for revenge. I mean, to beat you again.

Congrats on the retirement, Pete!
