Big Pine Paiute Tribal Council Condemns Violent Attacks and Issues Tribal State of Emergency
BIG PINE, Calif. (01.10.24) – The Big Pine Paiute Tribal Council expresses deep concern for our community and condemnation of the violent attacks on Tribal staff, substantial damage to and removal of tribal property, and the assault on the Big Pine Paiute Tribal government on January 7, 2024.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. Sunday, a mob of disgruntled individuals illegally broke into the Tribal office, which triggered the alarm and alerted Sierra Security, Tribal staff, Tribal Council members and law enforcement. Responding Tribal staff and Tribal Council members came upon a hostile group that had broken-off locks and forcibly entered the building. They had begun changing door locks, ransacking the office, and removing documents from the Community Development Department Office.
This mob included former Tribal Council members and staff: Genevieve Jones, Rhonda Paz, Roseanne Moose, Dave Moose and Cheryl Levine, who were present during the attack on Tribal staff and Tribal Council members and the damage to and removal of Tribal property; and Retha, Gina, and Roseanne, who lost in the June 2023 General Election by significant margins and have retaliated against the lawfully elected Tribal Council since the beginning of their term in June 2023. They escalated their retaliation after the Tribal Administration terminated Tribal Utility Operator Paul Huette in September 2023 for misconduct.
Other individuals who participated or who were present during the break-in include former Tribal Council Secretary Doree Richards, Heather Torres, Eva Lent-Bacoch, former Tribal Council member Retha Pierce-Huette, Justin Kinney (non-tribal member), Joanna Richards (non tribal member), Arthur Richards, Sonny Richards, Daniel “Spider” Pierce, Jasmine Botello (non tribal member), Jack Eddy (non-tribal member), Marc St. John (non-tribal member), Taze Nu Pa Benson (non-tribal member), Cameron Enos (non-tribal member), and Jose Gonzalez (non-tribal member).
The mob barricaded doors and physically blocked Tribal staff who responded to the alarm from entering the Tribal office. Before law enforcement responded to the break-in and assault on Tribal staff, some Tribal staff gained entry to the building through a window and managed to repel most of the mob from the building.
The mob physically attacked Tribal staff and one Tribal Council member by throwing deadbolt locks and doorknobs at them, and by toppling bookcases. Doree Richards ripped out cords to security equipment but failed to disable the burglar alarm, which continued to alert for more than 20 minutes until someone cut power to areas of the building. During this time, the mob assaulted Tribal staff and a Tribal Council member, continued to ransack Tribal offices, toppled furniture, removed property, and changed door locks. The damage to property and missing property is estimated to be more than $20,000.
No individual who participated in the mob violence is a duly elected Tribal official or employee of the Big Pine Paiute Tribe. Instead, these disgruntled individuals are attempting to illegally assume power and control of the government in violation of the Tribe’s Constitution. To achieve this goal, some of these individuals are threatening and attacking our citizens, Tribal staff and Tribal officials. Some of them attempted to take over the Tribal government in 2019 and illegally commandeered the Tribal gymnasium in November 2023.
“We strongly condemn the violence, threats, harassment, vandalism, and physical assaults by people who attacked, removed and damaged Tribal property,” said Big Pine Paiute Tribal Chairperson Cheyenne Stone. “Breaking and entering, harassment, and physical violence against our own people is criminal behavior that endangers our community. Our Tribal Council and staff have endured bullying, harassment, and physical violence since first taking office.”
“Our leadership is primarily women – mothers protecting our children and families – and we will not tolerate these vicious attacks on our people and government,” she said. “We have notified federal and local authorities of this violent attack and are pursuing criminal prosecution. During this difficult time, we urge our Tribal citizens to demonstrate respect, care, and support for one another as we move forward in 2024.”

Let’s not forget that not only does Cheyenne stone not live on the reservation that makes her ineligible to run for council in the first place, but the fact she did the Britney Spears thing, shaved her head bald, got scabies, and crashed into the big pine tree when it was alive and healthy not to long ago.
Nor the fact she’s the constant aggressor to her old relationship full of domestic violence and drunken behavior from her. Least we forget her stint in the looney bin from which she returns with a laundry list of meds to keep her sane now. What’s to say she forgets her meds one day while she’s trying to run the tribe?
As for j. Valasquez. It’s shame to see her come from a decent family of good people and yet still do so much negative in the community. She’s not the only in the mix, but she is definitely one of the main ones the drama and position surround. Her husband garret is very unprofessional and lack of real world experiences shows. Perfect example of why tribal politics shouldn’t be able to get you the job just because your spouse is in power or you know people of power within the tribe. His mom is good people, I pray his colonial style of hate doesn’t reflect back on to her.
I’m not in favor of new council battling back and forth as well. But you can definitely see there needs to be a mediated meeting between both old and new and discussed a real solution. Instead of continuing the hate they’re spreading. It’s quite embarrassing to the rest of the world what’s going on down there.
Never forget when Cheyenne and Stacy burned down their grandpa and uncles place which was a holy place for many native people, that in itself should show what a bad leader that could be. Don’t forget according to the government, when a tribes stops its beliefs and language, they cease to be a tribe. Should focus more on building up the tribe and helping the people out.
And know bear mace is never the answer to resolve arguments. 🤦🏽♂️
Wow. Sure hope you have facts to back all this up with. How do you know where anyone lives, how do you know when people go to the doctor or what kind of meds they take? How do you know anything about another person’s medical condition? And how does any of that even relate to an invalidated election? Are you a tribal member? If so, use your constitutional right to vote at the next election and leave your slander with those who refuse to read the constitution, choose breaking and entering as a solution, and refuse to accept their loss.
Sounds like the words of a disgruntled council member or tribal employee now. There’s no slander when it’s simply truth. Unfortunately I’m not simple minded enough to put my name down and have my family harassed just for knowing the truth. Or my house broken into, or if the other side is offended have my family bear maced.
Everyone knows how cheyennes family is, something wrong with each sister, and nephews. Bad actions usually show with bad symptoms. Even the dad tried to divorce out the family long ago, but was sucked back in by fear and bullying. I always imagine the scene in “norbit”, where’ he says “bad house, bad house” while being punished to the basement.
The truth is both sides make this issue very embarrassing for the tribe. To divide an entire community because you can’t simply open the floor fairly for all those to speak and voice their opinions is very toxic form of oppression. Truly, Indian country needs to stop hiring those just because they know someone or are with someone. It seems that may have started the downfall of a decent place. Just shameful as a whole.
If a council has nothing to hide or fear, make meetings open with a sense of freedom of no repercussions for things being said and issues being voiced. Don’t lie about transparency and wanting the best for the community, when that’s clearly a boarding school style tactic to deceive the outside world.
The current Council has meetings open to the public in-person AND via Zoom. The Council before them ONLY had closed meetings with no Zoom option. There were no General Council meetings for nearly 3 years! But you didn’t have a problem with that did you? Because It’s all personal. You continue to bring up old irrelevant gossip about people you clearly hate. You speak about “oppression” while publicly spreading gossip about other Natives (lateral oppression). Unless you’re non-Native and in that case who cares what you think. I only see one side breaking into the tribal office to steal documents, that’s the only group that’s embarrassing to me.
Oh my god, give it up already. You people did not have a quorum to remove Council and elect a new one. You lack reading comprehension and don’t understand the Tribal Constitution, that’s nobody’s fault but yours. Trying to bring up old gossip and drama is very telling. Only people with no leg to stand on do that. Get a life and MOVE ON. Don’t break into federal buildings and you won’t be maced, seems pretty simple to me.

This whole situation is so sickening!!! Why are these people trying so hard to over throw the council? For years the same people have been sitting on council and haven’t did anything to benefit the tribe. For years the tribe has been at a standstill. This is coming from a crazy woman who has been given absolute power from Cheyenne Stone who is not living on the Big Pine reservation and who is not eligible to be sitting as their chairperson. Their tribal council has been rightfully removed from their tribal council seat by our general membership. They refused to meet with the newly elected Tribal Council and continue to threaten and terrorize our community by retaliation of taking away benefits from elders, they removed the whole election committee who verified the petition signatures for their removal. They brought known biker gang (the Mongrals)members to our reservation to control and intimidate our members and newly elected council from rightfully gaining access to our tribal building. The 2 bikers even escorted Cheyenne Stone to her court appearance. Jacklyn and the removed council hindered our right to petition for removal at every turn and we were still able to elect new council representatives. We were unarmed and they were unprovoked and yet he still continued to spray in our faces at close range! Having the bear spray seems to be a premeditated response to PEOPLE not bears. Maybe these folks were at standing rock and saw how the cops dealt with a “mob”.
Or maybe it was in the office as a response to the continued threats to ‘storm the office’, harassment of staff, BBs shot through windows, broken windows and the constant bullying behavior that the fake ass council has proven to be their approach, over and over, culminating in a PREMEDITAED crime of breaking and entering where they got caught and sprayed. Maybe if LEOs would have gotten there 10 minutes earlier it would have been clear who was breaking in and no one would have been sprayed. Oh ya, I forgot, the people breaking in had already made sure there would be no LEO response, Maybe they should blame the deputy who slowed the response (at their own request and by their own admission). ICS instructed law enforcement NOT TO RESPOND, while legitimate tribal representatives and staff were being pushed, threatened with potentially DEADLY WEAPONS, and having doorknobs and locks thrown at their heads.
This is solid fact, and can be verified by listening the recordings of the police scanner from January 7th between 6pm and 10pm.
What I want to know is, why has there been ZERO RESPONSE from Inyo County? They are CLEARLY assisting criminals and are not afraid to do so, on record, on tape, and on video.
Have they even been asked about their activities by any newspapers?
Usually, when Inyo County violates the rights of indigenous people in this valley, they immediately follow up with a BIG WARM FLUFFY statement about how they are “working with tribal partners” to “resolve the matter”….. But that’s only when their PR Officer has material (video evidence) to work with and a believable, coherent story to spin in their favor……
From what I can tell, Inyo County has NONE of those things. They are completely defenseless and without any unifying cover story that is even remotely believable.
I doubt they have ANY credibility with the Big Pine Paiute government anymore.
I’M curious to see what type of bogus story Inyo County’s PR team tries to frame up for the public? They can’t say they are protecting the Native people in our community. Not even the other tribe’s trust them. In fact, Inyo County was sued by the Bishop Paiute Tribe a few years ago AND THEY LOST IN COURT!….. And Inyo County lost because they were supporting the illegal conduct of a terrible police officer (who tried to arrest a tribal cop).
I bet Inyo County Sheriffs are scurrying around right now, trying to convince every native person and leader they know (that isn’t from big pine tribe) that they are working as hard as they can.
If it was such a clear case of corruption and conspiracy by local law enforcement, caught on video, most people wouldn’t be able to believe it.
The same group of people broke into the tribe’s gymnasium only a few weeks ago (with aid from Eva Bacoch). Eva openly admits this. As her reward for assisting with their break-in, she was anointed as a leader of the “shadow council”.
Also, going back to 2019, THE SAME GROUP, AGAIN, barricaded themselves inside the SAME BUILDING. They even locked two elected government officers inside the building, and wouldn’t let them leave until they submitted to their demands.
This group has displayed a PATTERN of criminal acts and violence.
The accusation of “pre-mediatation” is pure projection, as this group ADMITS to planning the break-in and insurrection WEEKS IN ADVANCE.
Lastly, these alleged criminals RECORDED THEMSELVES admitting they were advised by Inyo County Sheriffs Officers (specifically Paul Dorame). They went even further and repeatedly stated, on camera, that Inyo County Sheriffs Officers had PRIOR KNOWLEDGE of the break-in, and even went so far as to ASSIST THE BURGLARS by providing them MORE time to change door locks and barricade themselves inside the building.
This is ALL publicly available information and you can all listen to the police scanner recordings yourselves.
Paul Dorame is specifically referenced by 911 dispatch, and advised other law inforcement officers NOT TO RESPOND.
Furthermore, Sheriff Paul Dorame and Inyo County Sheriffs officers openly indicate they had prior knowledge and ongoing communication WITH THE BURGLARS, because they are again, recorded on the police scanner stating “it’s just the NEW Tribal Council gaining access to the building” —— How would ANY Law Enforcement have this knowledge without being there UNLESS they were assisting the criminals themselves??????????

Retha- maybe you should not be so worried about the tribe and focus on your family. A petition gets you a meeting where at said meeting you have to have 51% of eligible voters present and voting for this decision to happen. You and your delusional group did not have that and you did not turn in your petition like it says in the constitution. It does not say, if said petition is against 4 members turn in to the member that is not being petitioned it says turn in to the tribal council. That’s strike 2. It also does not say to have the election committee verify signatures. How are they supposed to verify signatures? From pictures they probably have on their phones? Strike 3! Then we have the issue of lying to people to get them to sign your petition. Strike 4. Your whole process was corrupt from the beginning. This is the THIRD TIME the last three years this same group has broken into a tribal building attempted to barricade themselves inside.
In 2020 the same group broke into the same tribal building, locked elected officials inside a room and formed a human chain/barricade so the officials couldn’t leave.
two months ago, the same group (with the support of the shadow council) broke into the Tribe’s gymnasium, and attempted to hold their own elections.
Then last week, they broke into the Tribal headquarters again.
And to be clear, these same geniuses RECORDED THEMSELVES in the act. You can’t make this stuff up. And all the evidence can be found on YouTube.
They’re turning violent insurrections into an annual event over on the Rez……. And Inyo County Sheriffs office is LOVING IT.
As Sheriff Paul Dorame was overheard saying to Sheriff Noonan at the gas station in Big Pine last week “As long as they (Tribal Citizens) are all mad at us then we’re good, right?”
What is Sheriff Rennie doing about all this?
I heard there have been SERIOUS allegations involving some of those on the video (related to other serious crimes) but that Rennie’s department hasn’t even referred them to the District Attorney!!!!! And we are talking about violence and harassment against young women in our communities…..
It looks like Inyo County is not only ENCOURAGING violence in our tribal communities, they are actively assisting the perpetrators….
I heard the sheriffs are in POSESSION of the evidence, but they are protecting the perpetrator because he is friends with many of the local fire department and police force…… Which all seems to true, when considering the recent actions/in-actions taken by Inyo County Sheriffs.

Hired a husband and wife where the wife is his boss??!!” If you’re mad about a married couple being hired, what if I told you that Retha did the same thing at the Big Pine Post Office?? Would it piss you off to hear that she (Retha) hired TWO people to fill ONE position?? Maybe not. But what if those TWO people Retha hired for the ONE mail delivery position were her daughter and her daughter-in-law??!! That’s right, A MARRIED COUPLE WORKING TOGETHER and HIRED BY THEIR MOM!!!
Then those three FEDERAL POSTAL EMPLOYEES are the same people that were BEAR MACED WHEN THEY CUT THE POWER, AND BROKE INTO A FEDERAL BUILDING on 1/7/24. They are still employed as federal postal workers after burglarizing a FEDERAL BUILDING. What kind of “leader” (postmaster) allows that?? And after thinking about it, what’s stopping them from doing that at the Big Pine post office?? If you’re on their naughty list how are you sure you’re receiving all of your mail? They obviously have no problem taking matters into their own hands by doing whatever they see fit.
You can’t be upset with the hiring of one married couple, and not the other. At least Jackie and Garrett were filling TWO positions.
This Council has done more for our community in 7 months than the last Council has done in 2 years! The last Council could barely finish their meeting minutes and they hid from General Council behind the pandemic, stop lying. And what has Gina Jones ever done for our people? Besides setting bad precedent after bad precedent, which is why this violent group thinks they can remove an entire tribal council with only 30% of our voting population.

These law breaking fools don’t get it. Breaking and entering a Federal Building, destroying and stealing property, conspiracy to overthrow an existing Tribal Government, terrorist threats, stalking, spreading lies. They lost a Tribal Election June 2023. The shabbily put together a petition to remove current Tribal Council, held their meeting, NO QUORUM present, so the RECALL FAILED, then they proceeded to elect a fraudulent Tribal Council replacement. The former Tribal Council and Administration failed in their fudiciary duties to keep the Tribe up and running. They became late with audits and federal reporting, creating Federal sanctions against our Tribe. Why would we want them as our leaders?
You didn’t have a quorum to remove Council or elect a new one, your shady attempts to gain power failed, time to move on. Stop creating division and violence in our community. You should feel really embarrassed for your involvement in this. Do you really think this makes you look good?

It was sent to us as an official news press release by the Big Pine Paiute Tribe, and so we published it like we do every other official press release we receive. If corrections, retractions, or additions are later released, we’ll publish those too. Tonight we spoke to some of the people mentioned in the press release and advised them to send us a statement of their own if they’d like to present their standpoint, and if they do so we’ll also publish that. WHO is denying their presence or participation in the crimes? If they’re so confident, why don’t they hop on the comments, use their full name, and deny if publicly?
I’ll answer my own question. Because when this crime eventually goes to trial here in Inyo County, the participants/supporters of the crimes will be CRIMINALLY LIABLE for making false public statements about their involvement and prior-knowledge of the crime.
Someone should has Gina Jones if she had prior knowledge that the break-in was going to happen? Should Inyo County Supervisors be actively supporting burglaries and violence? What does District 4 Inyo County Supervisor Jen Roeser have to say about all this? Roeser is regularly on Facebook lavishing praise and support on some of the same people that broke into the Tribal building (Retha and Paul Huette). The corruption and fecklessness of Inyo County elected leaders and law enforcement is truly staggering.
Native people in Inyo County are under threat.
I pray that the FBI gets involved fast before someone is injured or worse.
Unfortunately for Native people, the FBI doesn’t show usually show up until AFTER the loss of life. Truly sad and disheartening for EVERYONE who lives in this valley.
