Beyond the Beyond: Rhode Island’s Most Puzzling UFO Encounter

In the summer of 1967, Rhode Island resident Harry Trudel noticed something strange hovering over the power lines near his home. He saw the object not once, but several days in a row, and each time he spotted it, it remained stationary in essentially the same spot. Metallic, long, and disc-shaped with a dome on top, Harry racked his brain on what it could be, as he had never seen anything like it.

He dug his camera out and snapped several photos of the object, which to this day remain some of the clearest photos of UFOs yet documented. A giant, silent airship with no visible control surfaces or propulsion system. It stayed in the sky, swaying slightly but hovering steadily. Trudel then lowered his camera, adjusted his position, and when he looked up, it was gone. He didn’t see it fade out or blast off in some dramatic exit. It just simply wasn’t there anymore.
In Rhode Island, several local newspapers picked up the story. And then national ones, and then UFO-related and other magazines. Skeptics have called it a blimp, weather balloon, or some experimental craft, but to this day the mystery has never been solved completely.

Trudel’s sightings did not appear in a vacuum. The 1960s were ripe for these types of sightings and photos. The Cold War fueled anxiety about aerial threats and experimental military aircraft, while television and movies brought stories of alien life to the forefront of popular culture.
And this would not be the last time that Rhode Island would have its brush with the unknown. Despite it being so small, the state has a surprisingly rich history with UFOs and the paranormal in general. In 1973, witnesses in Coventry reported seeing a luminous, circular object glide silently close to the ground, shifting colors as it hovered for a short time before disappearing.
In 1984, unusual lights appeared over the coast near Fort Adams in Newport, reportedly captured on naval radar and moving in triangular formations unlike any known aircraft. During the 1990s, similar sightings that were dubbed the “triangle lights” were reported over Providence and Pawtucket, with witnesses describing silent, dark triangular craft marked by three bright lights, reminiscent of reports from other regions. And in 2008, multiple witnesses over Providence described several fast-moving, wingless lights in V-formation soaring through the sky.
Over 50 years later, the Trudel case still baffles UFOlogists and casual UFO buffs. Whether it was a clever hoax, experimental aircraft, or something else entirely, it is a documented case that is still being discussed today. As far as I can tell, Trudel never gained any money or even ever sold the photos. He stuck by his story until the day he died.
