A Local Legend Passes Away: Erick Schat was 79

Erick Schat

This morning at around 5am, Bishop lost one of its most colorful and iconic characters. Erick Schat passed away in Reno at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Schat was the founder of “Erick Schat’s Bakkery” and the creator of “Sheepherder Bread.”

Erick Schat’s Bakkery, is one of the most profitable businesses in town and a huge tourist draw. His loss won’t only be missed as a spokesman for Bishop and a local legend. But as a business magnate as well. Often at the forefront of advertising. Who doesn’t remember the catchy little jingle, “Erick Schat’s, Bakkery, home of the original sheepherder bread….” Erick Schat was a forward thinking businessman who employed thousands over the years.
Erick Schat’s Bakkery, had 2.5 million visitors come through its doors this year so far. The bakery in the center of town is the biggest tourist draw in Bishop. His absense will create a huge hole in all of our hearts.
“At 79, he still ran circles around the young bakers and came to work everyday to perfect production and business operations,” said in a quote from the bakery. “He remained actively involved in every aspect of its day to day operations. He will be sorely missed.”
