JV Mathletes come out on top once again!

The BUHS Junior Varsity Mathletes took on five other schools at our own Bishop High School on Wednesday, September 30th. With a striking thirty-seven points, the JV students were once again triumphant against the other brave competitors who attended the meet. Contributing to the score as regulars, we had First Place Banyan Fulkerson with nine points, Second Place Tulika Deb and Fu Chuaewongprom with eight points, Third Place Hazel Hays with seven points, and Ali Rainville with five points. Joy Montano earned a Third Place ribbon with 7 points, Meika Borow and Liam Livingston earned Fourth Place ribbons scoring 6 points, while Trent Buchholz, Salomon Dominguez, and Dawson Lawrence scored 5 points, followed by Morgan Tetrick, Cosmo Schwartz, Sophia Albrecht, Jesse Cokeley and Django Davidson who scored 4 points. Also putting in their fair share of effort for the team were Sara Cardelas, Leah Crall, Olivia Daulton, Kaitlyn Girardin, and Aylin Leiva.

Each meet is 5 rounds; each round lasts 10 minutes with two problems to solve. These problems are deceptively simple but often turn out to be very complex. Here is an example of what these questions looked like:

Mercury weighs 13 ⅗ times as much as water. If a container can hold 6 ¼ pounds of water, how many pounds of mercury can it hold?

The JV Mathletes have the confidence to complete difficult problems like this with the help and support of our wonderful coach, DeeDee Buchholz. Here’s what she has to say: “I love coaching Mathletes here at BUHS. I get to know these awesome students in such a cool way because we have fun doing math together and every single one of us wants our team to be victorious, so putting in the effort for the sake of our team and our community is a unanimous vote. This is such a strong JV team that I feel certain we will earn League Champions again this year!” Our JV Mathletes are competing again on Wednesday, November 18th, 2026, at Boron High School. We wish them the best of luck.
