Eastern California Museum to Host Special Event with Author Lawrence Meeker

INYO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA – The Eastern California Museum, a department of Inyo County, is pleased to announce an upcoming special author program with Author Lawrence Meeker on Saturday, October 17th, 2026, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM.

Meeker worked as a civil engineer for Southern Pacific and railroad contractors for 25 years across Nevada and the West in the planning, design, and construction of railroad track, bridges, and other facilities. He spent another five years working on highways in rural Nevada and Arizona. His historic interest is in shortline railroads of Nevada, especially narrow gauge.

Meeker’s goal is to share the knowledge, maps and photos that he gathered over the years in a unique format by exploring ghost towns along the railroads. His presentations and guidebooks are the products of all this data and the multiple field trips necessary to confirm facilities at each location. He offers this work to the historic community and hopes that it may be one way to attract more young people to follow us in these activities. He has lived in Nevada most of his life.

This special event will be held inside the Eastern California Museum, located at 155 N. Grant St. in Independence. Meeker’s presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session, and there will be time for a book signing at the end.

All are welcome to join, and there is no cost to attend.

For more information, visit the Eastern California Museum’s Facebook page, or call 760-878-0258.
