In Memoriam: Alene Greenland
Alene (Hawkins) Greenland

Alene Greenland was born in Orange, CA on February 21, 1932. She passed away on October 20, 2022, after a long battle with cancer, at her home in Bishop, CA with loved ones at her side. Coincidentally this was her late husband’s birthday. She was one of two children born to Earl and Kathryn Hawkins. Alene attended Woodbury College where she earned her BA degree in fashion. While there she met Harry Greenland. They were married on January 5, 1952 and had four children: Debra in 1954, Alex in 1955, Karen in 1958, and Michael in 1960. Harry worked for many years for the fire department in the City of Covina and Monterey Park and after his retirement they moved to Bishop. Alene worked in several positions in the fashion industry and then devoted her time to raising her children as a homemaker. Through the years Alene made clothes for all her children and many of her grandchildren. She was a member of the Methodist church, the Methodist women’s group and the quilt group. Alene was a
prolific quilter and won many awards at the Tri County fair for the quilts that she created. Alene was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Alene and Harry were able to travel about the country for many years visiting family and gathering information to support Alene’s passionate research on the family genealogy. One of the things that stood out about Alene was the constant presence of a smile on her face right up to her last day, especially when enjoying the fruits and veggies from her garden. Alene was preceded in death by her mother Kathryn, father Earl, and sister Valerie
Norman. She is survived by children Debbie Dudas, Alex Greenland, Karen Rager, and Mike Greenland; and grandchildren Shawna Svacina, Krista Svacina, Curtis Lawson, and Jason Lawson. There are thirteen surviving great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. I offer a special thank you to my wife Tammy Greenland and my best friend Terry Tye for their years of support and love for mom and dad. A memorial service will be held at 1:00PM on Saturday November 12, 2022 at the Methodist Church
followed by graveside services at the E. Line street cemetery. Light refreshments after the graveside service will be sponsored by the Methodist Women’s group at the Methodist center. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Methodist Church Endowment.
