The PENTA Building Group Safety Stand-Down Event Focused on Suicide Prevention

This week, The PENTA Building Group (PENTA) temporarily halted construction at the Limelight Mammoth Hotel job-site to conduct a Safety Stand-Down focused on suicide prevention. September is National Suicide Prevention Month and according to the Centers for Disease Control, the construction industry has one of the highest rates of suicide.

The event, hosted in partnership with Limelight Hotels/The Little Nell Group, welcomed members of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department to discuss Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), the higher-than-average rate of suicides in the construction industry, how to recognize signs, as well as provide resources and support to help prevent it. In addition, PENTA representatives spoke about the company’s transition to using safety helmets, which offer more protection helping to prevent TBIs. The construction industry sees the most fatal and non-fatal TBIs among all U.S. workplaces, which can lead to suicidal tendencies.

Approximately 50 construction workers were in attendance and awards were given to 12 individuals who’ve gone above and beyond in the realm of safety, including Deryk Gallant with Jacobsson Engineering, who was named Safety Leader of the Quarter. In addition, trade partners Schnabel Geo Structural Design & Construction, Urata & Sons Concrete, Pacific Steel Group and Power Plus attended and were raffle winners, with prizes donated by High Country Lumber. Lunch was provided by The Rolling Chef.
