October Happenings at C5 Studios
October happenings at C5 Studios!
C5 Studios presents:
Nora Akino – Monotypes and Paintings
Exhibition dates: October 7 – November 19, 2022
Reception on Friday, October 7th 2022 5pm – 7.30pm
C5 Studios Community Arts Center presents a new show of monotypes and paintings by Nora Akino.
Born in Japan to a family of artists, Nora Akino spent her childhood living in Japan, India, Nepal, Mexico, Canada and the United States, creating art from a very young age. During the years before making Bishop her home, Akino found herself feeling a deep affinity for the landscape, nurtured over many visits to the Eastern Sierra.
After relocating to Bishop, Akino found herself driven to finding out more about this landscape that captivated her, particularly its history and ongoing struggle for ecological and cultural integrity. As Akino explains in her artist statement “I dedicate this show to the vision of Payahuunadü as it was and is still in the memories and hopes of its Indigenous people and to their current struggles to protect the land.”
C5 Studios is proud to present this unique show of monotypes and paintings that so beautifully reflect a fascination with and honoring of the landscape that surrounds us that will resonate with many of the folks who call this valley home.
The show opens to the public on Friday, October 7th with a reception from 5pm-7.30pm. All are welcome.

Color Workshop 2 – Exploring Color Values and Mixing Muted and Neutral Colors
A painting workshop with Ana Budnyk
Wednesday October 26th, 2022 – 5.45pm – 7.45pm
In this workshop, we will play with different color values and hues. Each color has its inherent value on a value scale, and we will learn how to identify color values and develop your eye to make nuanced value distinctions. We will further deepen our knowledge of color mixing by playing with the category of the most desaturated colors, called “chromatic grays” (often referred to as neutrals, for example, skin colors). We will make a painted-paper collage using color shapes using broad hues and value ranges. This class will give you more confidence in mixing paint and inspiration to experiment further in your projects.
We will use gouache paint and dive into archival collage methods, paving the way for future explorations. An in-depth color theory presentation will be offered in the class with examples from early mid-century color theorists like Johannes Itten and Joseph Albers.
