CURRENT FALL COLOR REPORT – September 28, 2022: FALL HAS ARRIVED! We’re happy to report both Sagehen Summit and Virginia Lakes are peaking right now and should be brilliant for the next 7 days. Both locations are in the “75-100% GO NOW” category with some sections of trees still having green mixed into the yellow and orange leaves. If you’re traveling to Virginia Lakes, take Dunderburg Meadows Road to Green Creek Road for additional groves of peaking aspen with some red and crimson colors mixed into the landscape. (AWD vehicles recommended) These places should be at the top of your list for this weekend.

Peaking colors can also be found in sections around Rock Creek Lake right now. The majority of trees in the lower elevations along the road are still green making this our only “50-75% go now” category.

The Bodie Hills, Sonora Pass, Lobdell Lake Road, Conway Summit, McGee Creek Canyon, Convict Lake and the Mammoth Lakes Basin all made nice progress this week but are all still at least a week out before approaching peak colors. These locations are in the 10-50% range but all worth checking out next week as we move into October.

We will update this report every Wednesday for the remainder of the season. If you’re new to fall colors in Mono County you can view images from previous years to get an idea of timing for all locations and elevations, and download our Fall Color Map to help navigate all the fall color hot spots in the Eastern Sierra.
