Lakes Basin to Open Memorial Day Weekend for Pedestrian and Bike Access
The Lakes Basin opens for non-vehicle (pedestrian and bike) access ONLY this Friday, May 24, 2024.
FREE SHUTTLE
- Parking will be extremely limited so catch the FREE Lakes Basin Trolley from The Village, operating 7 days a week between 9am-6pm to the Twin Lakes Parking Lot. Review the daily schedule and stops on the ESTA website.
- The Intra-basin Trolley will pick up passengers behind the locked gate and various points of interest within the Lakes Basin every 30 minutes (on the hour/half hour), between 9am-6pm.
- The Lakes Basin Trolley will resume regular summer operations when the Lake Mary Road gate opens for full vehicle access.
- Well-behaved pets that are muzzled and leashed, or in a carrier are welcome aboard the Trolley.
#RECREATERESPONSIBLY
- Due to the expansive snow cover, there will be limited recreational opportunities in the Lakes Basin.
- Although the road is closed to the public for vehicle access, administrative access by permittees and agencies is permitted.
- Please walk/ride with caution on the road as the multi-use path (MUP) is not accessible at this time and there will be some vehicle traffic on the roads.
- To ensure access for all, the Mammoth Lakes Police Department will be patrolling the Twin Lakes Parking Lot and areas around the gate and within the Lakes Basin. Parked vehicles are required to be completely off the roadway. No parking is permitted along Lake Mary Road adjacent to the multi-use path (MUP).
- Please recreate safely around streams, lakes, and waterways as many of the lakes are still covered in ice.
The Town would like to acknowledge the Roads Department for working to clear the Lakes Basin Roads and parking lots, and the Inyo National Forest, Mammoth Ranger District for partner and agency coordination.
