Coyote Flat and White Mountain Roads open Friday
BISHOP, Calif., July 27, 2023 — Inyo National Forest will open Coyote Flat and White Mountain Roads tomorrow, July 28 at 8:00 a.m.
Coyote Flat
Access to Coyote Flat is now open via From Bishop (7S10) and Big Pine (32E303/9S19).
Recently, heavily gullied sections of Coyote Flat Road have been filled with rock and gravel to make the road passable for high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicles, thanks to the outstanding volunteer work from Valley Outdoors. Coyote Road still requires additional maintenance to fix water diversions and repair rough sections of road. The road is not recommended for two-wheel drive vehicles.
Forest Service staff continue to work on agreements with individuals in the community who have the proper and right-sized heavy equipment and also with volunteer groups such as Valley Outdoors to organize additional public work day events to maintain damaged roads.
In order to help prepare for storm events and damage in the future, the “Coyote Flat OHV Recreation Enhancement” is a long-term project for major improvements for this road. Some of the proposed actions include repairing system roads for safety and resource protection, reviewing the travel management decision in this area, and adjusting if needed for resource protection and recreation enhancement.
White Mountain Road
White Mountain Road to the White Mountain trailhead is now open due to the large snow drifts melting away.
The road from White Mountain Road to Patriarch Grove is open to foot traffic, but it still impassable to motorized vehicles due to snow drifts.
A revised Forest Order for all closed roads is available at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1126057.pdf
