c5 studios

Exhibition dates: May 24  – July 6, 2024

Reception on Friday, May 24th 5.30pm – 7.30pm

C5 Studios is proud to present Horse and Human, a group show featuring the work of Dorcas Birchim, Marye Roeser, Anjuli Deb, Laura Talbot, Christine Eyer, Susan Branston, Tenaya Holton, Patience Williams, Caspar Ulvang, and Monika Metzenthin.

Horse and Human investigates the relationship between humans and horses.  Throughout history, horses have appeared within works of art depicting their utilization in battle, as transportation, to hunt, and to reflect the status of their rider.  Throughout this very valley, horses have found a role in the lives of many people; their identities connected through hours spent exploring terrain untouched by motorized vehicles, hard work on local ranches and the unique mutual understanding that can be cultivated between horse and human.  Indeed, the horse and human relationship is one at the very center of the identity of this valley, and therefore it is no surprise that it is depicted through the artwork created by many artists who call this place home.  As Roeser reflects, “As I paint, I try to capture the iridescent shine on a horse’s coat, the sun gleaming on a cowboy’s dusty hat or the shimmering reflection on an exquisite mountain lake.”

The human relationship with the equine is one that requires presence, power sharing and respect. Horses have developed sophisticated communicative skills, which fostered their ability to respond to human emotional states, deepening the interspecies  bond.

This show weaves together images, memories and stories that provide insight into this unique relationship between two species of animal whose symbiotic relationship spans the realms of work, recreation and emotional connection.  We invite viewers to take time to read the stories shared to deepen your understanding of the relationships at work and play within the artwork displayed.

The show opens to the public on Friday, May 24th 2024 at C5 Studios Community Arts Center with a reception with the artist from 5.30pm – 7.30pm. All are welcome!
