Beyond the Beyond: Ted Holiday and the Unified Mystery

There are so many personalities in the field of the paranormal. Serious, stern, light-hearted, silly, confused, compromised, and the list goes on and on. Many, like Masta P, have found a way to make a dollar (or a million) out of fifteen cents. They’re exploiting fibbers exploiting the easily exploited. It’s a racket, I tell you.

But there are also what I would call genuine researchers.

These are truly driven less by applause, less by profit, than by a persistent and unwavering curiosity for the unknown. These are individuals willing to tug at strings, even when it leads away from status, money, or easy answers. Ted Holiday was one of them.

Holiday was a British author and researcher who was best known for his—some might call it—
unconventional work regarding Loch Ness and the supposed creature said to be lurking just
below the surface. He would spend weeks there at a time, videotaping, interviewing witnesses…
observing. Holiday sometimes clashed with other researchers because, instead of sonar and
biological explanations, he noticed that often the Nessie sightings would also overlap with other
strange phenomena.

Witnesses reported strong emotional reactions with their sightings. Psychic experiences would happen in the area around the same time to people not associated with the original sighting. Strange lights would sometimes be seen in the sky. He claimed the loch had what he called “Window Areas,” hotspots where multiple types of phenomena would cluster together. He paid close attention to fault lines, psychological and magnetic anomalies, times of day, and what he looked at as behavior rather than single events.

For Holiday, this would form the basis for future writings and discussions on the topic. Rather than examining the paranormal as separate phenomena, he began to suspect that each part fit together like a puzzle piece or a larger tapestry, an actor playing different roles. And it went deeper than nuts-and-bolts craft or reptilian lake monsters, as sightings seemed to interact with expectation and human perception. High strangeness, indeed.

Biologists, ufologists, physics researchers, sasquatch hunters… they may all be after the same thing: a changing manifestation of the same anomaly, entity, or entities. He called this the Unified Mystery. Holiday never solved the mystery and was very skeptical of anyone who claimed they had. He was very aware of sharks in the water and tried to distance himself from them and their “research.”

He resisted placing the phenomenon into categories but rather chose to place it in one single category—something that made many uncomfortable. Whatever it was, he claimed that it was very aware that humans were trying to interact with it, and sometimes it would interact back. The phenomenon would constantly change, making it incredibly hard to research. But Holiday tried and would often go beyond the edge where most would stop. He is a little-known and rarely talked-about figure in the fields of ufology and cryptozoology, psychic research, and the paranormal in general, but his influence quietly threaded through all of them.

So no, he didn’t solve the question he was after, but his point was that we’re busy trying to trap animals, recover downed craft, or guess the symbol on the other side of a Zener card. We do this when we really should be holding a mirror up to the human mind: to reflect our own assumptions, our myths and ideas, and our own need to find meaning.
