Beyond the Beyond: Dover Demon – A New England Mystery

In April of 1977, in the small town of Dover, Massachusetts, a legend was born. Seventeen-year-old Bill Bartlett drove his car down Farm Street one night after hanging out with some high school friends. As he drove past a wooded stretch of road, he saw something out of the corner of his eye and turned his head to see what it was. There was a piece of wall, half eroded by the elements and overgrown with moss and vines and perched atop it was something young Bill would never forget for the rest of his life.

It was peach colored with an oversized head and long, spindly arms and legs. Its eyes glowed orange in his high beams, and it was unlike any animal he’d seen before—or since. It locked onto his eyes and never looked away for even a moment. No fear, just an intense gaze that sent an electrical jolt through Bill’s body. He pressed his foot against the accelerator and quickly left the creature behind.

Later that night, he drew a picture of what he saw in a notebook. At the bottom, he wrote:

“I, Bill Bartlett, swear on a stack of Bibles that I saw this creature.”

Just hours later, a second teenager named John Baxter was walking home along Miller Road. He looked down as he moved, only looking up occasionally to throw small pebbles into the woods that lined the side of the road. With one rock left, he raised his head, and what he saw froze him in his tracks. It was nearly identical to what Bill saw. Large head, long limbs and fingers, and eyes glowing in the moonlight that seemed to shake John to his core.

And Abby Brabham saw it the next night near Springdale Avenue, describing dull, glowing green eyes and reciting what the other boys said nearly word for word. She was a high school student riding with another teen named Will Taintor, and they saw the creature crouching near the side of the road, watching them as they drove by. The body, she said, looked almost like a monkey with no hair. But not quite. Something about it was off. Something about it was… alien. What’s interesting about Abby’s account is that she didn’t know the other witnesses, but her description was almost exactly the same.

Some said the creature must have been a young moose or foal, but can we give these young people a little more credit than that? Others said it had to be an escaped monkey. Now where have we heard that before?

Maybe it was an alien being, as it does share some characteristics with the classical gray alien descriptions.

It could be an interdimensional being, time traveler, escaped test animal, an elemental, military robot, spiritual entity, Djinn, actual demon, lost baby alien, sleep-deprived college student, or teenage hoax. It’s a mystery for the ages.

Perhaps the Dover Demon was never meant to be fully understood but is there to inspire wonder and nurture curiosity of the unknown. An unexplained flicker in the dark woods of the supernatural, a brief brush with the impossible that reminds us how much of the world, and perhaps the mind, remains yet unexplored.
