What’s Happening?

Right now, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is finalizing its plans for how much water to extract from Payahuunadü over the next twelve months.

LADWP proposed pumping ~54,000–81,000 acre-feet of water over the next year. However, Inyo County has recommended a reduction to ~46,000 acre-feet. We are asking LADWP to accept Inyo County’s reduced recommendations.

Inyo County’s reduced pumping recommendation reflects months of public advocacy and productive dialogue between the County Water Department, Water Commission, and community members. This reduction would provide meaningful relief to the parts of the valley most harmed by LADWP’s over-pumping.

LADWP has historically ignored Inyo County’s recommendations, so let’s press LADWP to accept Inyo County’s recommendations and help protect our ecosystems!

What Can YOU Do?

Urge LADWP to adopt Inyo County’s reduced pumping recommendation.

The LA-Inyo Technical Group meeting on May 7th at 9am is our last opportunity to engage before the groundwater pumping plan is finalized for the year. You can participate in three ways:

In person — LADWP Building, 300 Mandich St., Bishop

Online via Microsoft Teams — Agenda and link will be posted here when available

Written comment — Send prior to the meeting to [email protected]

Can’t make it in person? Tell a friend. To our allies in Los Angeles, we especially need your voices. LADWP needs to hear from its rate-payers!

Want to prepare for the meeting?

The Eastern Sierra Water Alliance is hosting a community prep workshop TONIGHT at 6pm! They’ll cover what to expect at the Technical Group meeting, how to engage with the scientific data, and public comment strategy.
