A Classic Mammoth Race Weekend for MUSD Nordic Teams
This past Friday, February 3rd, the Mammoth High School and Mammoth Middle School Nordic teams competed in the “Mammoth Classic” ski race held at the Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center. The hosting Mammoth teams raced against nine other California-Nevada Interscholastic Ski and Snowboard Federation (CNISSF) teams and, despite blustery conditions, had a very strong showing on their home trails.
The Mammoth Varsity boys skied a fantastic race with Dane Karch winning the 7k course, followed closely by Cabot Godoy (3rd), Mason Georgeson (6th), Wade Perry (9th), Jack Leonard (10th), and Davin Wolter (11th).
Of the Mammoth High School girls, Mackenna Smith won the open division, and in the Varsity division, Olivia Karch and Ella Walker skied to 9th and 11th places respectively.
The Mammoth Middle School girls dominated the field with Felicity Nelson skiing to 3rd place, Pearl Johnson (4th), Reagan Czeschin (6th), Ella Perry (7th), Alex Dennison (10th), Sierra Lonsdale (11th), and Kylie Wolter (12th). Theo Clark skied to 22nd place in the boys division.
On Saturday, February 4th, the Eastern Sierra Nordic Ski Association (ESNSA) and Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center hosted the “Lakes Basin Youth Race.” Thirty participants raced the 1km “Nordic-Cross” loop which had a variety of obstacles to navigate such as rollers, jumps, and bamboo features. Local racers ranged from 6 – 13 years old and included Reed Higerd, Theo Clark, Nixon Czeschin, Eli Perry, Sam Lonsdale, Reagan Czeschin, Pearl Johnson, Felicity Nelson, Ella Perry, Kylie Wolter, Sierra Lonsdale, Maddie Nelson, Hayden Dubberly, Erin Deaver, Susie Altenbach, and Arwa Perumal.
Sunday’s Junior National qualifier was canceled due to weather.
Next up for the Mammoth Nordic teams is a freestyle (skate) race up at North Tahoe High School.
