Local Man Arrested After Shots Fired, Dog Reported Killed in Olancha
OLANCHA, Calif. — An Olancha resident was taken into custody after Inyo County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a reported shooting incident Monday evening.
According to a September 29 release from the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to an Olancha residence at approximately 8:38 p.m. on September 28 after receiving a report of gunshots.
It was later reported that a dog had been shot and killed in the residence’s yard, and gunshot reports were also made from near the Mobile gas station.
Deputies subsequently found the suspect in a field near the reported residence, and made an arrest without incident after issuing verbal commands.
The suspect, identified as James Knight of Olancha, informed deputies that he had discarded a gun used in the reported crime, and K9 Envar successfully located the gun 20-30 feet away from where Knight was detained.
Knight was booked at the Inyo County Jail on four felony charges:
- 246 PC – Shooting at an inhabited dwelling, vehicle, or occupied building
- 29800(A)(1) PC – Felon/addict in possession of a firearm
- 597(A) PC – Cruelty to an animal/animal killing
- 246.3(A) PC – Willful discharge of a firearm in a grossly negligent manner
The Sheriff’s Office noted that the investigation is ongoing and no further identifying information is being released at present.
Suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
