Plenty Of Sunshine And Adventures Await in Bishop

Plenty Of Sunshine And Adventures Await
The big winter may have slowed the re-awakening of nature, especially in the higher elevations. Good news – the warm sunshine and symphony of songbirds is in full effect within Owens Valley.
Plan B Here Is Better Than Plan A Anywhere
Bishopโs backyard isnโt just big, itโs HUGE. We might sound like a broken record, but the heavy snowfall we received this winter is sticking around, especially in the higher elevations. Instead of trying to force yourself to only one activity, itโs a good idea to have a few options in mind. Wildflower viewing – bloom has been especially huge in the Owens Valley and has begun to creep up into the mountains. Take a short side trip from 395 up HWY 168 west out of Bishop for a real treat!
This is also a good time to explore the backyard via your vehicle by seeing the โweird sideโ of California on a road trip. Take a glimpse into the history of the region by visiting the Laws Railroad Museum and Historical Site and the Owens Valley Paiute-Shoshone Cultural Center. Or remove your daily stresses by enjoying a dip in Keough’s Hot Springs.
Fishing
It’s true that angling along the Owens River is not possible right now due to unprecedented run-off, there are many alternative fishing locations that are safe and super productive. Lake Sabrina, South Lake, and Intake II are all accessible and well-stocked with Rainbow Trout. We’re recommending anglers stick to the still water locations and use extreme caution near any moving water.
Check Ahead
From high alpine lakes still covered in snow to certain backcountry roads being washed out, the surrounding wilderness is just that – wild. We canโt stress this next point enough. Check the road conditions before heading out on your dayโs adventure. Or better yet, stop by the Visitor Center to get the latest scoop on whatโs open and whatโs not. In addition, the snowmelt has been swelling all the creeks, streams, and rivers above their banks so give them a bit more room than normal to stay safe this summer.
Independence Day
Enjoy a little slice of small-town Americana pie and celebrate the Fourth of July in Bishop. Throughout the holiday week, youโll find activities that everyone in your family will enjoy. The Bishop City Park Pool offers free swimming, there will be live music, a watermelon eating contest, bike & scooter decorating contest and free pie & ice cream – and of course fireworks โ lots of fireworks!
Looking Ahead…
While itโs only June, donโt forget to start planning for the Eastern Sierra Tri-County Fair. There will be carnival rides, destruction derby, rodeo, live music, 1000’s of homemade & homegrown exhibits and amazing fair food! Tickets are on sale now.
You also won’t want to miss the Millpond Music Festival. After three decades, itโs not just another great music festival but a tradition. Located in the Millpond Park just north of Bishop, youโll discover as eclectic a lineup of bands, singers, and performers as the scenery in the Eastern Sierra.
