September Art News From Mono Arts Council

![]()

Director’s Thoughts,
Wow! What a month we just had. From packing up our old location, to the challenges of scheduling contractors and art drop off, to the late nights putting on the finishing touches, we did it! Our Grand Opening Celebration/Ribbon Cutting/Artist Reception on August 30th was just amazing and inspiring. Over 300 people came to celebrate, including our Seasonal Show Artists from the Home on the Range of Light exhibit, our Featured Artist Jenny Kane, both our long-time and new gallery artists, our board, staff, the Mammoth Lakes Chamber of Commerce, and so many locals and visitors! Now that we are open, please come visit us! Buy art, make art, sign up for a class, or make a donation to help us recover the costs of this grand relocation.
I would like to thank all those who helped with the move and Grand Opening, specifically: Volunteer Eastern Sierra, Annemarie Hall, Little Bear Bateman, Brooke Rogers, Jessica Kennedy, Peggy Armenta, Bob Kent, Teissia Treynet, Susi Bains, Deja Charles-Tomkins, Dora & Kevin Bessenbacher, Theresa Otto, Dana Ellis, Dawn Vereuck, Russ Reese, and of course, the Roger & Ruth MacFarlane Foundation for providing us with the grant funds to make this move possible.
Now on to the future! We have so many great things on the horizon. The school year has started and that means our Teaching Artists will be heading into the classrooms very soon with our Create With the Greats and the Crescendo Music Programs. We will be announcing our after-school and home-school programs later this month, and have some very special events coming soon, Paint Mono County and the MAC Gala. Please keep reading for all the exciting things coming your way!
If you are as excited about everything happening as we are, please consider our call to action below:
Mono Arts Council is looking for passionate and creative individuals to join our Fundraising Committee! As a committee member, you’ll play a key role in supporting the arts in Mono County by helping to plan and execute fundraising initiatives and events, engage with donors, and bring fresh ideas to our efforts. The committee meets on the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month from 2:30–3:30 PM, and we’d love for you to join us. Whether you have experience in fundraising or just a love for the arts and a desire to give back, we welcome your involvement. As your time would be considered volunteering for MAC, we have some great perks for helping out, including Arts & Wine gift certificates and gallery discounts. If you’re interested in joining or want to learn more, please contact Teissia Treynet at [email protected].
Please keep reading for all the great things happening throughout the Eastern Sierra!
May the arts be with you,
Kristin Reese

Mosaics: Tray or Mirror, with Kristi Day @MAC

Join us for this special two-day event led by Kristi Day! We will be planning out our designs, cutting glass, laying tiles, and finishing off by grouting our mosaic creations (you’ll get to choose tray or mirror). No prior knowledge needed! Like a lot of great things, creating mosaics takes time and a bit of patience – almost like a meditative form of art. Mosaics dates back at least 4,000 years, it is thought to have originated in Mesopotamia, and we still enjoy this beautiful and functional art form today.
To accommodate people’s different working paces, this class will be held over two days, with an optional third day to come back and grout your piece.
Wednesday, October 8th / 5:30 – 8:30 pm
AND
Thursday, October 9th / 5:30 – 8:30 pm
OPTIONAL
Friday, October 10th / 5:30 – 7:30 pm (grouting only)
To clarify – if you finish your mosaic on day one (Wednesday October 8th) you can grout on day two (Thursday October 9th). If you need more time to glue your pieces down and want to use Thursday’s class for that, you will need to come back on Friday October 10th to grout your piece OR bring grout and instructions home to do it there. Just be aware that this is a messy process and you cannot flush the grout or grout water down the drain, it will clog.
In this class, MAC will provide:
– All supplies needed to create a mosaic tray or mirror
– Wine, Beer, and La Croix
– A totally fun time!
Class Price: $145
Wednesday-Thursday (Opt. Friday), October 8th-10th | 5:30pm – 8:30pm

Staff Spotlight:
M Little Bear Bateman

This month we are excited to welcome our newest staff member, M Little Bear Bateman (Little Bear). While they just started at the end of July, they have already jumped right in and become an integral part of our team. Their passion for the arts is infectious and we hope you will stop in and say hello now that we are open in our new space!
“Aerial arts and dance sit at the top as my favorite art medium, as it allows me to immediately connect with my body and my soul. I enjoy discovering new ways to operate my body, especially in a moving meditation prioritizing strength, flexibility, and mindfulness. Dancing my emotions out really allows me a way to stay sane, connect with myself, and connect with my community and/or audience.”

Student Spotlight:
Margaret

School is BACK IN SESSION – and this month we talked to Margaret, a first grader at BES, about why she loves art, and what she’s excited about at school this year.
