Sample The Eastern Sierra Summer In A Myriad Of Ways
Sample The Eastern Sierra Summer In A Myriad Of Ways
The heat is on in Bishop. But unlike other hot locales, there are many ways to still enjoy the great outdoors in the summer, if you have a plan. As the saying “it’s a dry heat” goes… due to our proximity to the High Sierra and the desert climate, you can escape by going out early, taking a dip in an alpine lake, or go up in elevation to play. Here are a few ideas on how you can sample Bishop’s Big Backyard this summer during the day.
Taste The Essence Of The Sierra
Be sure to bring your refillable water bottle! Locals and frequent visitors swear that drinking water straight from the tap tastes better than anything you can buy in the store. With upwards of 95% of beer being water, it’s no wonder the Eastern Sierra is home to so many award-winning breweries. And as of this month, they have partnered together to create the Eastern Sierra Ale Trail. If you visit all six, you’ll earn an Eastern Sierra Ale Trail Patch.
Take A Drive
Even on the hottest days Bishop and its big backyard’s natural beauty is still accessible to all via a scenic drive. Right from town you can see everything from stark desert lowlands to the lush vegetation, streams, and the lakes of the high country. And all right from your car window. Buckle up and take in 5 of our favorite scenic drives surrounding Bishop.
Go Fishing!
Now is a great time to grab your gear and head to the lakes above Bishop! South Lake, Sabrina and Intake II are full and the trout are calling! Click here for the most up to date info.
Word Of Caution
If you do head higher in elevation, most of the lakes are finally ice free and resorts are welcoming visitors. Even so, the snow continues to fight the good fight and linger in the upper elevations (primarily above 11,000 feet). Be very aware in places like the far side of Bishop Pass and along the PCT. Conditions are deep slushy mushy snow, and the water is still flowing fiercely, making for sketchy creek crossings everywhere. It’s a good idea to stop by the Bishop Chamber first to get the most up to the minute information.
Music In The Mountains
Even though it’s summer, we’re already thinking about fall… specifically the Millpond Music Festival. After three decades, the Millpond Music Festival isn’t just another great music festival but a tradition. Located in the Millpond Park just north of Bishop, you’ll find just as an eclectic lineup of bands, singers, and performers as the scenery in the Eastern Sierra. Tickets are on sale now!
There are many other fun events coming up – downtown markets, Tri-County Fair, Pow Wow and more! Check out the calendar.
Summer Air Service to the Eastern Sierra runs through September 4th.
