Election Integrity is a Nonpartisan Issue
Election Integrity is a Nonpartisan Issue
Inyo County Clerk-Recorder/Registrar of Voters, Danielle M. Sexton, would like to provide the following public statement:
I want to touch on the recent request from the Department of Justice (DOJ) that was delivered to all California County Elections Officials regarding potentially ineligible voters. In a nutshell, the DOJ and Homeland Security have identified a list of individuals they believe may require additional eligibility verification and have asked election officials to review those registrations and determine whether any action is necessary before those individuals’ ballots are processed. Because Inyo County did not have any active registered voters identified on its list, I am in a unique position to speak a little more openly on this topic.
Most importantly, I want to strongly emphasize that election integrity is not a partisan issue. Regardless of our political affiliations, we all benefit from accurate voter registration records, reliable verification processes, and public confidence in our elections. At the heart of election administration is the responsibility to ensure that elections are conducted fairly, accurately, and transparently.
While the DOJ and the State of California have expressed differing views on this issue, it is important to recognize that all parties involved share a common interest in maintaining fair and accurate elections. As citizens, our focus should remain on supporting processes that uphold both election integrity and voter confidence, rather than viewing these efforts through a partisan lens.
Election data should be regularly reviewed, maintained, and protected. We should never have to choose between election security and protecting eligible voters. A trustworthy election system must do both. By safeguarding the rights of eligible voters while ensuring the accuracy of voter registration records, we strengthen public trust in the democratic process and reinforce confidence in the outcomes of our elections. So, as we are reading the stories on social media, or listening to the news, it is important that we view this with a better understanding and not taking sides so we may strengthen this as a nonpartisan issue.
