SUMMARY:Big Pine Cemetery Heritage Walk
DESCRIPTION:For anyone who has wandered through an old cemetery and wondered about the lives and stories behind the names carved in stone\, the Big Pine Cemetery District is offering a chance to hear some of those stories brought to life. \nAfter a hiatus of several years\, the Big Pine Cemetery Heritage Walk returns Saturday\, October 10\, at historic Crocker Cemetery. The cemetery’s earliest burials are believed to date to the late 1860s\, leaving more than 150 years of Big Pine history waiting to be discovered. \nThose who remember Heritage Walks of years past will find something different this year: all of the stories featured on the walk will be new. \nDuring the Heritage Walk\, local residents portraying people buried at Crocker Cemetery will share first-person stories of their lives\, their experiences and the events that helped shape Big Pine and the Owens Valley. Along the way\, visitors may encounter a few other characters wandering among the headstones\, perhaps still searching for a story\, a familiar face\, or even a lost soul. \nThis year’s stories are only the beginning. Many more are waiting to be told\, and as the renewed Heritage Walk tradition unfolds in the years ahead\, visitors can look forward to meeting new characters and discovering new chapters of Big Pine’s past with each walk. \nEach guided tour will last approximately one hour\, with seating available at presentation stops throughout the cemetery. Refreshments will be offered afterward at the Big Pine Saloon located onsite\, and an opportunity for photos with our ghost. \nThe Big Pine Cemetery Heritage Walk will be held Saturday\, October 10\, with tours departing between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Crocker Cemetery\, 605 Crocker Street\, Big Pine. Tickets are a $10 donation and may be purchased in advance by calling Rose at 760 938-2911 or at the event. \nThe Heritage Walk is presented by the Big Pine Cemetery District with the help of local volunteers dedicated to keeping the stories of Big Pine alive.

SUMMARY:Eastern California Museum Special Event with Lawrence Meeker
DESCRIPTION:The Eastern California Museum\, a department of Inyo County\, is pleased to announce an upcoming special author program with Author Lawrence Meeker on Saturday\, October 17th\, 2026\, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. \nMeeker worked as a civil engineer for Southern Pacific and railroad contractors for 25 years across Nevada and the West in the planning\, design\, and construction of railroad track\, bridges\, and other facilities. He spent another five years working on highways in rural Nevada and Arizona. His historic interest is in shortline railroads of Nevada\, especially narrow gauge. \nMeeker’s goal is to share the knowledge\, maps and photos that he gathered over the years in a unique format by exploring ghost towns along the railroads. His presentations and guidebooks are the products of all this data and the multiple field trips necessary to confirm facilities at each location. He offers this work to the historic community and hopes that it may be one way to attract more young people to follow us in these activities. He has lived in Nevada most of his life. \nThis special event will be held inside the Eastern California Museum\, located at 155 N. Grant St. in Independence. Meeker’s presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session\, and there will be time for a book signing at the end. \nAll are welcome to join\, and there is no cost to attend. \nFor more information\, visit the Eastern California Museum’s Facebook page\, or call 760-878-0258. \nLawrence Meeker Biography / Rev. 02-10-26 \nLawrence Meeker has lived in Nevada for most of his life.
