Somewhere between families packing up their cars in pursuit of sunny beach days and businesses filling up our inboxes with emails warning us ‘Don’t miss out on this Memorial Day sale’\, we forget to pause and reflect on what this day means for so many. \nFor the families and friends of our fallen heroes\, the real meaning of Memorial Day is known all too well. For them\, this day is filled with a mix of emotions as they grieve their loved ones and honor their memory. While these families feel their loss every day\, Memorial Day marks a solemn\, but special day where the rest of our country stops and remembers with them. \nAs we begin this Memorial Day\, take time to stop and remember those who laid down their lives for the cause of freedom and collectively mourn with the family members left behind. To those of you remembering a loved one today\, our thoughts and prayers are with you. \nThe Big Pine American Legion Auxiliary Unit 457 invites the community to join in a Memorial Day Service on Monday\, May 25 at 11:00 at the Veteran’s Memorial Triangle on the corner of Highways 395 and 168 to honor all veterans. The day will begin with placing flags on our veterans headstones starting at 8:00 at Crocker Cemetery and 8:30 at Woodman Cemetery.

The Shelter helps and houses approximately 250 animals each year until they can find their forever homes. \nThe following donations are being accepted:\n—any unopened dog or cat treats\n—lightly used small dog or cat beds\n—new or slightly used leashes\, collars\, and toys\n—clean towels and blankets\n—unopened dog or cat food \nDog or cat food must be one of the following: Diamond Naturals chicken and rice formula dog food\, Nulo chicken and cod cat food. These brands can be purchased at Tailwaggers. The staff knows the foods that are okay for the shelter. Please ask. \nMoney donations can be accepted by the Inyo Animal Resource Foundation at their website inyoanimalresourcefoundation.org. \nDonations can be dropped off at Big Pine schools or the Animal Shelter located at 1001 County Road in Big Pine. The drive ends on May 21. Please help your local animal shelter and animals in need.
