SUMMARY:Manzanar Baseball Project Historical Re-enactment Doubleheader
DESCRIPTION:Remember Manzanar With The Manzanar Baseball Project.\n  \n“In this place of sadness\, injustice and pain\, we will do something joyful\, righteous and healing. We will play baseball.”\nINYO350 is proud to share the following information from the Manzanar Baseball Project: \nJapanese people have been passionate about baseball for over 150 years\, ever since its introduction to Japan in the 1870s. When Japanese immigrants began coming to America they brought their love of the game with them\, passing it on to their American-born children\, the Nisei generation. Prior to WWII\, Japanese American baseball flourished up and down the west coast in big cities and small farm towns alike. On December 7\, 1941 that world was shattered as loyal Americans of Japanese ancestry became identified as “the enemy.” \nManzanar National Historic Site was the first of ten major Japanese American internment camps constructed in the early months of 1942. Located in the Owens Valley 225 miles north of Los Angeles\, Manzanar held over 10\,000 Japanese American people. Throughout the ten camps over 120\,000 people\, most of them American citizens\, were imprisoned without due process of law in the largest mass incarceration in United States history. \nThe camps devastated Japanese American communities\, but one aspect of pre-war life they were able to hang on to was baseball. Even through incarceration their passion for the game remained strong. The National Pastime took on powerful symbolic meaning\, and the baseball diamond became a sacred space to enact a quintessential American ritual. \nThrough its historical re-enactment doubleheader — October 17\, 2026 @ 9:30AM — 5:00PM played on Manzanar’s lovingly restored ballfield\, the Manzanar Baseball Project honors Japanese Americans who found a way to play the game they loved in spite of injustice. \nThis project is a tribute to the spirit and determination of the Japanese American community\, the power of baseball to uplift and unite people\, and the importance of safeguarding the rights and principles enshrined in our Constitution. \nRegister for tickets. October 17\, 2026 @ 9:30AM — 5:00PM \nWatch the video about the project.

SUMMARY:No Kings March
DESCRIPTION:Join the NO KINGS March on October 17. Sing with the Eastern Sierra Resistance Chorus.\nOn Saturday\, October 17\, 2026\, we will once again peacefully mobilize our local community for a march in Bishop. This NO KINGS 4.0 event marks the next phase of our movement – taking the local power people have built directly to the ballot box. NO KINGS 4.0 March for Voting Rights will focus on nonpartisan voter participation\, being in community with each other\, and ensuring that every eligible voter has a plan to vote\, knows their options to vote\, and is ready to make their voice count. \nJoin us on October 17th at the Bishop City Park at 2:00PM to March for Voting Rights for every eligible American. There will be a brief pre-march rally with music and then a sidewalk march along Main Street. Handmade signs and costumes welcome!  \nHere’s a great opportunity that day! The Singing Resistance Eastern Sierra chorus will do two songs at the event. To keep it simple – and doable – they will sing “We Were Made for These Times” (performed at the NO KINGS event in March) again and also sing the very well known protest standard\, “We Shall Overcome.”  They will rehearse on Monday\, October 12 at 5:30PM in the big community hall of the Bishop United Methodist Church. YOU can join them! Email or call Fran Hunt for information at franhunt@gmail.com or 703 424 3143.

SUMMARY:Eastern California Museum Special Event with Lawrence Meeker
DESCRIPTION:The Eastern California Museum\, a department of Inyo County\, is pleased to announce an upcoming special author program with Author Lawrence Meeker on Saturday\, October 17th\, 2026\, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. \nMeeker worked as a civil engineer for Southern Pacific and railroad contractors for 25 years across Nevada and the West in the planning\, design\, and construction of railroad track\, bridges\, and other facilities. He spent another five years working on highways in rural Nevada and Arizona. His historic interest is in shortline railroads of Nevada\, especially narrow gauge. \nMeeker’s goal is to share the knowledge\, maps and photos that he gathered over the years in a unique format by exploring ghost towns along the railroads. His presentations and guidebooks are the products of all this data and the multiple field trips necessary to confirm facilities at each location. He offers this work to the historic community and hopes that it may be one way to attract more young people to follow us in these activities. He has lived in Nevada most of his life. \nThis special event will be held inside the Eastern California Museum\, located at 155 N. Grant St. in Independence. Meeker’s presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session\, and there will be time for a book signing at the end. \nAll are welcome to join\, and there is no cost to attend. \nFor more information\, visit the Eastern California Museum’s Facebook page\, or call 760-878-0258. \nLawrence Meeker Biography / Rev. 02-10-26 \nLawrence Meeker has lived in Nevada for most of his life.
