SUMMARY:Getting Here: A Retrospective Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Getting Here: A Retrospective Art Exhibition \nInyo Council for the Arts (ICA) is proud to announce “Getting Here\,” a solo retrospective celebrating the expansive career of local artist Drew Wickman. \nThe exhibition will open with a public reception on Saturday\, April 11\, 2026 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the ICA gallery in Bishop and will run through Tuesday\, May 26\, 2026. \nThis is the first solo retrospective at ICA\, offering the community a comprehensive look at the evolution of a craft refined over more than fifty years. “Getting Here” traces Wickman’s creative journey\, beginning with his early studies at the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, where he received a BFA in Ceramics and Art History in 1967\, to his decades spent as a pillar of the Eastern Sierra arts scene. \n“The first artwork I clearly remember making was when I was around five years old. It was a birthday cake drawing contest with my mother\,” Wickman recalls. “My drawing was terrible. This contest inspired me to improve my drawing skills and I think\, possibly\, I have.” \nSince moving to Inyo County in 1974\, Wickman has worked as a dedicated potter and educator\, teaching art in public schools\, community colleges\, and private studios. Alongside his wife Judy\, Wickman has owned two art galleries and continues to produce work from their home studio in Lone Pine\, CA. \nWickman’s work is characterized by a sophisticated blending of local native materials with commercial elements\, utilizing various firing and decorating methods. His aesthetic is deeply informed by the stark beauty of the High Desert\, the traditional techniques of Japanese pottery\, and the quietude of Zen Buddhist philosophy. \n“We are incredibly honored to host Drew’s first retrospective\,” says Sharon Freilich\, Executive Director of the ICA. “His work is a reflection of the Eastern Sierra itself—exposed\, intentional\, and deeply rooted in the landscape. Seeing the full arc of his career in one space is a gift to our community.”
